AEW World Champion Kenny Omega recently spoke with Alex McCarthy of talkSPORT, and he discussed the controversial announcement of his upcoming Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch with Jon Moxley. Omega explained that this violent match will allow him to expand his horizons and test himself as a performer.
“The whole name of the game for me when AEW started was, I wanted to shoulder some new challenges, and whether it be my tasks inside the ring or outside the ring, I wanted to take on a whole bunch of new projects, and Jon Moxley is someone who challenges me in exactly that kind of way,” said Omega.
“I never thought I’d be doing what I’m doing right now. Moxley challenges me, and he sort of inspires me to bring that part out of me that I never knew that I had, and for me it’s exciting. I’m not very violent or physical, really. I’m a sportsman, I’m a competitor. But to be able to challenge myself in something a little more violent than what I’m used to, there’s something exciting to it, something that gets my blood boiling.”
Omega also discussed his rivalry with Moxley and stated that he also wants to see the hardcore side that the former champion has been renowned for.
“As much as [this feud] is about bringing out sort of another layer of Kenny Omega, I hope it brings out the best in Jon Moxley, too,” said Omega. ” I wanna see that real violent side of Jon Moxley. I only knew of Dean Ambrose, so I’ve only seen what they showed me on their TV programming. I don’t know about the CZW Jon Moxley. I don’t really know that stuff. I kinda wanna push the envelope a little further.
“I wanna see more. I wanna see that version. I wanna see what put him on the map originally, and I wanna see if I can keep up with that.”
Needless to say, Omega’s Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch with Moxley is sure to be quite buzzworthy ahead of AEW Revolution on March 7.
